This year marks the 20th anniversary of Illmatic‘s release. Widely considered to be one of the greatest and most influential hip hop albums of all time, Illmatic offers a dynamic combination of observational lyricism and pristine production. The son of a jazz and blues musician, Nas displays an unrivaled gift for free-form poetry. With complex rhyme structures, clever world play, and precise delivery, Nas’ first-person narratives explore his experience growing up as a teenager in public housing in Queens, an area consumed by drugs, gang violence, and poverty. His words are aided by top notch production that juxtaposes understated, jazz-influenced loops with loud, heavy beats. You simply can’t find another album more insightful or hard-hitting.
Let’s have a picnic in the recently renovated Echo Park Lake. There’s walking paths, paddle boats, and good times.
